United Methodist Women |
The
organized unit of United Methodist
Women (UMW) shall be a community of
women whose PURPOSE is to know God and
to experience freedom as whole persons
through Jesus Christ; to develop a
creative, supportive fellowship; and to
expand concepts of mission through
participation in the global ministries
of the Church.
UMW
encourages friendship and fellowship, as
well as study, outreach, and prayer, all
with an eye to social justice.
In Community
--- Do you long for a small group
connection with women devoted to social
justice and outreach? UMW Circles are
your answer.
In Mission
--- UMW is the second largest woman’s
organization in the world and it doesn’t
take that responsibility lightly. Local
UMW Units across the country raise money
through pledges to support ministry
opportunities across the globe. UMW
truly believes that the world is our
parish.
In Action
--- The General Board of Global
Ministries’ Women’s Division (of which
UMW is a part) has an office in
Washington, D.C. charged with monitoring
public policy issues relating to women
and children. The Action Network is
the way UMW keeps concerned people
informed about the issues that need
immediate action. Updates are sent to
Action Network members with talking
points and requests for specific action
(ex. letter writing to lawmakers).
This is a free, easy way to stay
informed as to the issues you hold most
dear.
In the
Quest for Knowledge
--- Each year UMW focuses on three
different mission studies in order to
form global perspectives and learn about
needs, become engaged in social justice
issues, and to nurture the spirit. In
addition to Units and Circles studying
these themes, each summer the South
Carolina Conference provides a multi-day
and/or evening, in-depth study on each
of the mission studies for both women
and children.
UMW also
provides a Reading Program of books on
the mission study topics and other
readings in the broader categories of
spiritual growth, social justice,
nurturing for community, and education
for mission. Check out the UMW shelves
in Bowen library to learn more and start
reading.
Response Magazine
is a high quality, inexpensive
social-justice focused magazine
published by the UMW. This monthly
magazine will give you a global
perspective plus local steps to take to
improve our world.
Caring for God’s Creation
--- UMW believes in being good stewards
of the earth. The Green Team is a
national environmental issues network in
which you can be active, too.
Reaching Out in Times of Need
--- UMW provides casseroles for church
members in challenging times, for
example, following a birth or adoption,
during or following an illness, after a
surgery, or after a loss of a loved
one. Food may be requested by
contacting the church office at
227-2963.
