"Now
that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you
should also wash one another's feet. I have set an
example that you should do as I have done for you."
- John 13:1
Jesus
proclaimed to his disciples: “You
are the light of the world . . . let your light shine before
others, that they may see your good works and give glory to
your Father in heaven"
- Matthew 5:14,16
These words are behind the covenant that each person makes
when joining Mathews Church, pledging to “faithfully
participate in its ministries by my prayers, my presence, my
gifts, and my service”
(United
Methodist Hymnal, p 38).
We recognize that letting our light shine before others
requires a commitment in all four of these areas.
Why
do we encourage acts of service? As followers of Christ, we
search out ways to be like Christ. Acts of service take many
forms, a random act of kindness for a stranger or a group
participating in a community wide event. For members at
Mathews, service is one of the four expectations of
membership.
Each
of us must make intentional choices in order to keep our
commitment to serve. The
Committee on Lay Leadership wants to help you keep this
commitment by providing you with this list of possible areas
of service at Mathews. Please prayerfully consider the ways in which God has gifted
you and is calling you to serve here.
Be assured that we, as fellow members of Mathews, will
support and assist you in your area of service, just as we
know that God will equip us all to serve in the areas to which
God is calling us.
We
do not consider this to be an exhaustive list of all possible
areas of service. If
God is giving you a vision of an additional ministry, please
communicate this to the Pastor.
We will join you in praying for this new potential
ministry.
We
believe God has ordained every believer a minister with a
calling, passion, and spiritual giftedness unique in the body
of Christ; that meaningful, joy-filled service is an outgrowth
of each individual’s personal relationship with Him.
We champion the value of service both inside and outside of
our church as we build a community of deeply committed
Christians who are the light in our world. We can help
you find your place of service in the body of Christ!
Through Lay Ministries at Mathews United Methodist Church, we are
not simply recruiting and deploying volunteers, we are
preparing people to be a part of God’s loving, life-giving,
redeeming concern for all of humankind and creation by
providing opportunities for you to give back and to grow in
your relationship with God through service to others beyond
the walls of the church. There is sometimes risk
involved, but there is also joy beyond your imagination!
While
varied in level of intensity, length of commitment, and skills
required; the various ministries at Mathews provide an
opportunity for you to see the world through God’s eyes and
to use your unique gifts to respond as only you can to the
needs that call out to you. We provide an opportunity
for congregation members to grow in their faith -- from seeker
to guide -- while following in the footsteps of Jesus.
If you are interested in serving in any of the following
positions of service and leadership, please contact the Pastor
who serves as the Chair of the Committee on Lay Leadership.
